The article investigates the narrative modes and strategies through which the 'new' Gordimer of "Beethoven Was One-Sixteenth Black and Other Stories" (2007) could be shown to explore a multifaceted range of motifs, situations and character profiles with much less strained, deterministic overtones than in most of her previous works. Her old 'transparent ego' (see Lionel Abrahams, "Nadine Gordimer: The Transparent Ego", 1960) loses here its monolithic aplomb to nimbly or parodically pursue minor tracks in search of half-buried traces and a liminality no longer strictly associated with blackness or white dissidence.
